Ruminal Tympany

Causes :
  • Grazing legume pasture and those fed with legumes, hays and high concentrate rations.
  • Complete esophageal obstruction or choke can result when an animal swallows incom-pletely chewsd, relatively soild feeds.
  • Marked hypocalcemia can result in failure of the ruminal, musculature to contract which would contribute to the rumen decreased ability to eliminate fermentation gas.
  • Miseating of plastic sack or vinyl bags, which are undigestable.


Clinical signs and lesions :
  • Distention of the left paralimber fossa and abdomen.
  • Discomfort and animal may get up and lie down difficulty in breathing.
  • Excessive salivation.
  • Lungs are compressed.
  • Rumen is distended.
  • Pale liver due to expulsion of blood from the organ.
  • Thoracic portion of the esphagus is pale.
  • Kicking at the belly.


Recommendation :
  • Administer a sulfactant (Poloxalene or ethoxylate), a detergent or mineral oil.
  • Avoid grazing mainly legume pasture and on high level grain diets.
  • Clean up and not waste plastic matters that undigestable and cow's favorite.
