THELAZIASIS

Local name : Eye worm

Cause : Thelazia spp.

Transmission :
The face fly Musca autumnalis is a common vector. They feed on eye secretion of cattle which provides an ideal relationship of transmission.


Clinical signs and lesions :
  • Gross examination of the eye may reveal the worms.
  • Mild to severe inflamation of the conjunctiva and opacity of the cornea.
  • Ulceration and perforation in severe cases.
  • Excessive lacrimation.
  • Photophobia. keratitis.
  • Abscess formation on the eyelids.



Recommendations:
  • Mechanical removal of worms with forceps following instillation of a local anesthetic
  • Fly control measures especially of face flies.
