Transportation

City bus and sky train, Sea bus, you can use same ticket. If you have a monthly pass, also you can use it to those transportation. One month pass is reasonable. 10 tickets are also reasonable too. You can get them at Seven Eleven or any market.

Get in the bus from front door. Pay first. Get off from middle door. There is a bus No.100, which goes round to the air port to downtown. It should be 3 zone. You can use one or two zone ticket with additional money for 3 zone.

All passes and tickets may be used for all transportation of BC transit. It could be valid for 90 minutes after you pay your fare. You may have transfer ticket. On the bus, you put it in the machine. Sky Train and Sea Bus, operates on a Proof of Payment basis. You must have a valid fare, available for inspection upon request, at all time when on-board.

Local bus has a cycle carrier on the ahead. You can set your bike up and get in. You may move with your bike as well.

 

Sky Train

There are many vending machine at the station. Push button first, it tells you how much you have to put in. Faster than city bus.

 

Sea Bus

Sea Bus connects North Vancouver and Water Front in Downtown. Fare is same as sky train also city bus.

 

Limousine Bus

From the air port to Downtown, limousine bus is available. Bus stops major hotel in downtown. Fare is $12- /one way. If you buy round ticket, it’s cheaper.

Long distance bus

Main is a subway station also main train station too. Long distance bus depart from here. Grey hound is the major bus company. Make sure before you go to the station. Fare and time table should depends on destination.

 

Train

Going to Montreal and Toronto, you may go by train. It’s takes long long days.

 

Air Plane

Domestic air plane also depart from Vancouver air port. You may book the ticket through by internet or telephone also travel agency.

Stand By If you already know where you go, you may do stand by. Go to the freight company at the air port directly. Tell them you want to go there by stand by. You have to arrive the air port at least prior to 2 hours departure time. If you are on the line in 5 people, you can get seat. It’s cheaper.

 

Taxi

You can call to the taxi company. You can catch on the street too. Open door by yourself and get in. Pay with bill + 10-15% of bill as tip.

From Air Port to Downtown Appx.CA$24+Tip (in 2002)

In any place in downtown, you can catch a taxi. Also you may call a cab.

Rent a car

Avis is the famous rent a car company. You can get at the station, downtown, also air port. International driver’s license must be needed.

 

Gas shop

You have to fill gas by yourself or you can pay additional fee. Price should be depended on the shop.

In the life

Canada is quite convenient country to live. Especially Vancouver is not such a big city. Everything is in reach.

 

Bank

If you stay in Canada for a long time, you should open your bank account. You can pay almost everything by bank card. ATM machines are available for 24 hours.

Cigarette

It’s very expensive in Canada. You can get at Convenience store or grocery also smoke shop. Bring ID. Smoke shop sells a bit cheaper than other stores.

 

Alcohol

Beer and vines are reasonable. But high degree of alcohol should be expensive. Bring ID as well.

 

Grocery

Safe way, London Drug store, so many stores. I like to but everything at public market though.

Hospital/Clinic

If you have BC social insurance, you have to pay all expense. The doctor gives you subscription. You bring it to the pharmacy.

 

Dentist

It’s also yours. Usually travel insurance does not cover this expense. So you be careful.

 

Library

There is a big good library in Vancouver. Also their branches are around in Vancouver. You have to be a member. Needs ID and Visa

 

Invitation

If you are invited to the party, you should go 10 minutes later than scheduled time. It’s called fashionable late in western society. If it is not a party, you can be on time. Bring vine or flower to them. Fashion could depends. But most occasion, they wear very casual wears. If you wear something very formal, maybe you might be embarrassing.

Dinner Party : Everybody brings one dish. You should bring one dish which be able to share with everybody. Also bring your drink too.

Birthday Party : Gift to the birthday person and vine or something to the family.  

 

In any case, you should ask to help washing dishes after the party. Even they refuse, you should ask.

 

Invite someone

In western culture, they come a bit later than scheduled time. If you start the party along Japanese style, you should tell them that in advance.

Get the free paper, called “Straight”. Movie schedule, live schedule and concert schedule also many local events are on the paper.

 

Canada is a country built by immigrants. There are so many different people live together. Off course they have different religion, different culture. Please respect other culture and customs. Even you do not believe in any religion, still you can pray. No god punish you.
