The Star-Spangled Banner（星条旗よ永遠なれ）



Oh,say can you see,by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad striped and bright stars,through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched,were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare,the bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?


米英戦争のさなかの、１８１４年９月１３日から１４日にかけて、ワシントンの北東、ボルティモア港にあるマクヘンリー砦はイギリス軍の激しい砲撃にさらされました。すべてが破壊してしまったと思われた１４日、夜明けの光の中に砦の星条旗はまだはためいていたのです。この光景を見ていて感動した、アメリカの弁護士で詩人のFrancis Scott Key が作詞したものです。曲は１８世紀のイギリスの旋律が流用されました。国家に制定されたのは意外に遅く、１９３１年３月３日です。 前のページに戻る
