English Festival Proposal

February 11, 2000

l  GOALS OF ESS (English Speaking Society) CLUB

Speak, listen, read and write in English

Understand English speaking countries and cultures

  THE EF (English Festival)

  The current EF program

Each school makes an independent project/activity showing what their ESS Club did
  over the past year

Example: play, video, speech, song, etc.

Each school presents their project/activity at the EF

  15 20 minutes on stage

The rest of the time, in the audience

Students are NOTusing English very much when they sit

Does ESS = English Sitting Society?!?!

l  CURRENT PROBLEMS

Fewer and fewer students are joining ESS Clubs

Fewer schools are participating in the EF

l  SOLUTIONS TO THESE PROBLEMS

Make ESS Clubs more attractive to new students

Make the EF more attractive to more schools

Make the EF a single group project

Make the EF the most important event of our ESS Clubs

l  NEW EF PROPOSAL

Make next years EF an all-school World Quiz competition

  Example topic: Life in theUSA

Each ESS Club is given one category to research

Examples: US President;USculture; US sports, etc.

From April June, each ESS Club prepares 30 questions and answers in English on their
 category

In June, give ALL the questions (no answers) to ALL the clubs (13 Clubs X 30 questions
 = 390 questions about theUSA)

From September November, study questions, find answers, and memorize the answers

The EF World Quiz competition will be held in late fall (November?)

ALL schools will participate at ALL times

Questions and answers must be in complete English sentences

NO NOTES, MEMOS, BOOKS, etc. (all from memory)

Awards will be presented to the winning schools

l  WHAT THESE CHANGES MEAN

ESS Club members must research, read, write, listen to and speak English so they can
participate and do well in the EF

  English ability will become greater

Knowledge of English speaking countries and cultures will be- come greater

l  REMEMBER THE GOALS OF THE ESS CLUB!

ENGLISH FESTIVAL 2000

WORLD QUIZ COMPETITION

The EF is changing! This year, we're introducing the 1st World Quiz Competition.

We need to remember the goals of ESS (English Speaking Society) Club: Speaking,
listening and understanding English and English- speaking countries’ cultures. We
feel that the World Quiz Competition will help us reach these goals.

This year, our quiz topic will be theU.S.A.Each school will choose a category to
research. For example:

American sports

Presidents

Election 2000

American government

American history

American National Parks

American food

American literature

American movies

The 50 States

American music

American holidays

American cities

American idioms

American schools

American custom

We will then research our category and write a set of questions and answers (in
English, of course). Then, each school will give their questions (NOT answers) to the
other schools. Everybody can try to find the answers to all the questions. Finally, we
will hold the World Quiz Competition at the EF, using the questions we’ve studied.
Which school can answer the most questions the fastest? Which school can win?

Of course, if any school wants to perform a play, skit or song at the EF, they can during
breaks! Schools can also prepare poster displays on topics they are interested in.

However, we hope the main event for everyone will be the World Quiz Competition.

LET'S MAKE THIS THE BEST EF EVER,

AND LET'S DO IT IN ENGLISH!

RULES OF THE GAME

Suggestions for the World Quiz Competition

1)  The competition is divided into two rounds: Round 1 is the morning (contestants answer
questions), and Round 2 in the afternoon (students supply questions).

2)  Only 3 members of each team can play at any given time. Every 15 minutes, there will
be a pause in the game for new players to join.

3)  All members who are NOT playing must sit quietly and watch the game. No studying can
be done during the game time. You may not help the players at any time you are in the
  audience.

4)  Each school can have a list of its own questions and answers. No other papers are
  allowed.

5)  The chairperson will call on each school in rotation to ask a question (Round 1) or supply
  an answer (Round 2).

6)  If your team knows the correct answer raise your school’s name card. The chairperson
will call on the first team to raise their card.

7)  If your answer is correct, you get 1 point. If it is wrong, you may lose 1 point. In the
case of a wrong answer, teams can try again until the correct answer is given. Teachers
  will be keeping score.

8)  If a team feels their answer is correct even though it is different from the model answer,
your teachers will make the final decision.

9)  The winning school will be determined by the high score after Round 2 is completed. In
case of a tie score at the end of Round 2, the tied schools will participate in a play-off
answering questions concerning American Idioms. These questions will be prepared by
your teachers and will be secret. You cannot study these questions in advance.

EF 2000 Teachers' Notes

The Tasks

1)  Each school’s ESS club has chosen a topic area concerning theU.S.A.and is preparing 20
  multiple-choice questions concerning their area.

2)  These multiple-choice questions will be given to all the clubs.

3)  Students will research and find the correct answers for all of the questions.

Research
We need to find ways to help the students’ research. Obviously, using the Internet
would be one good way. Schools that have Internet accessibility will need to help those
that don't.

The Event
We're thinking of holding the World Quiz Competition in two rounds. Round one
would consist of hearing the questions and providing the correct answers. Round two
would consist of hearing the answers and providing the questions. In between rounds,
schools could perform skits, plays, songs etc, if they wish.

Problems
We need a chairperson to run the show. Should this be a teacher or a student? Also,
should the students answer questions in round one in full sentence form? Do we need a
moderator to determine if the answers/questions are indeed correct? Do we need a
special set of questions in case of a tie?

In addition, we need to consider carefully where we hold the contest. What are the
physical needs? Do we need microphones for each school?

We also need to develop some rules of procedure for the contest.

Finally, we need to think what the winning school(s) will get as prizes.

Student Roles
We also need to think of how the students can participate in the running of this EF,
and all of the other activities of the Private Schools' ESS Club organization.
