I received my B.Eng., M.Eng., and Dr.Eng. in 1991, 1993, and 1996, respectively, from Toyohashi University of Technology. During 1996-2000, I have been an invited researcher at ATR Interpreting Telecommunications Research Laboratories(ATR-ITL). After then, I have been an invited researcher at ATR Spoken Language Translation Research Laboratories(ATR-SLT). In 1998, I have also been a visiting researcher at National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition of Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, P.R.China. I have also been a part-time lecturer in Toyohashi University of Technology since April 2002.

My major research interests are in the area of multilingual machine translation (MT) and/or speech translation between Japanese and Chinese / English / Korean, text summarization, automatic paraphrasing, and others in natural language processing (NLP). In the former ATR-ITL project, I was responsible for projects on Japanese-Korean-Japanese MT and Japanese-Chinese MT, which utilize example-based TDMT (Transfer-Driven Machine Translation) methodology. I have also joined a project on developing Japanese-English, Japanese-German, Japanese-Chinese MT in its ellipsis resolution module.

In the current ATR-SLT project, I am in charge of Japanese-Chinese-Japanese MT construction. I have proposed the Sandglass model, which is designed mainly for non-English MT, where translation is done through "clever" twin paraphrasers and a light-and-simple transfer. I have also engaged to basic research on document summarization and paraphrasing together with Masuyama Laboratory of Toyohashi University of Technology since 1990.

I am a member of ACL, The Association for Natural Language Processing(Japan), and Information Processing Society of Japan. I am a subscription member of Journal of Chinese Information Processing (ISSN 1003-0077). I was a committee member of NLPRS2001 Workshop on Automatic Paraphrasing: Theories and Applications, and "Toward Automatic Paraphrasing", a domestic workshop of the Seventh Annual Meeting of the Association for Natural Language Processing. I have reviewed some papers for some international conferences and (domestic) journals, most of which are concerned with (Japanese) text summarization and various areas of Korean language processing.
