Low-cost Energy Production through the Application of Solar Biotechnology
Masaaki IWABUCHI

This paper describes one of the most important problem to be solved by our generation developing a renewable, low-priced, and clean energy source. The dinosaur dominated the earth for one hundred and sixty million years and suddenly became extinct sixty-five million years ago. Only one million five hundred thousand years have passed since primitive man appeared. Only 138 years have passed since a true oil-based civilization began in 1850 (when petroleum refining technique were first established) .
The president of EXXON predicts that the price of oil will jump to between 30 - 35 dollars per barrel sometime around 1995 due to the exhaustion of resources. He also stated that the only substitutes for oil on which we can place our hopes before 1995 would be tar sand and oil shale. Do we accept his thought? I would propose that the utilization of solar biotechnology permit us to produce 660 Liters of oil daily per hectare at an approximate cost of 10 dollars per barrel.
When the production technology of this kind of energy, will be on our hands, we will even be able to survive for several generations provided that we do not expose ourselves to a nuclear war nor a meteorite should crash into the earth. Without such technology, our history would end in a very short period of time just like dinosaur, due to either nuclear war or the crash of a big meteorite. The author succeeded in fixing almost 30% of the visible ray energy in an experiment using chlorella. This is equivalent to 88% of the theoretical value of 34%, being 200 times more efficient in visible ray conversion than is grain currently culture as done in Japan.

Key Words : Survival of the human race, Solar energy conversion, New energy, Petrofarming, Hydrogen plantation,
