Essay No.3
What do you think of
“subtle discrimination”?
I think the subtle discrimination is as serious problem as the clear discrimination or even more serious, because the difference in the way to feel subtle discrimination between white and black people. Now, I'll give an example to explain this sentence's mean more concretely.
At page 20 in this article, it's written that at the Washington Post, one of the most famous newspaper company in the U.S., a female editor told to Dreyfuss “How do we get more blacks as good as Joel Dreyfuss?” I guess each feeling of two persons in this scene. Firstly, considering on the part of a woman, maybe white race, she didn't notice what she had said is a kind of subtle discrimination because she thought what she had said didn't hurt his feelings but even praise his ability. However, on the part of Dreyfuss, intelligence black journalist, he found her remark offensive and told her as much because he found in her saying the subtle discrimination against his race that almost all blacks except special persons like Dreyfuss are inferior to white people in brain.
This example helps us to recognize the complexity of this problem. Clear discrimination is noticed by both races so whites try to say nothing discriminate blacks or those who once say it are criticized by blacks and finally say less and less times. On the other hand, subtle one isn't noticed by the white because it looks like praise rather than abuse from their view so that they usually have no attention to use these expressions like the example. However, black and minorities feel them sensitively and get hurt to high degree because in the long time they've been treated badly and discriminated so many times by majority which are almost white (particular WASP) so that they get the habit to have much attention to know how they're treated. To sum up, whites think that they're not racists because they don't say any words that hurt minorities but this excuse means they didn't only clear discrimination and they really do subtle discrimination whereas minorities get more and more hurt in thinking they are still discriminated. This gap between their way to feel is too great to be solved in short time. Apparently, race problem has been improved to some extent but in reality it still exists in the U.S. because of this gap.
What solve or at least improve this problem? I think the best way is to construct the way to have all people treated equally, but it's impossible in reality. That's because no laws, even constitution are useful to do this. Then, what is the best and realistic method? I think it's to make the discussion (or talking) about this problem among all races in public places. You seem to think it is not also realistic, but this is needed. At the page 12 in this article, it's written that many people are afraid of talking about the real problem, race discrimination because after they say something about it, then they can't know what will happen to you, for example being arrested, called racist, or Uncle Toms, and so on. However, nothing is fundamentally improved without facing this problem.
If this method also doesn't work, that possibly didn't work in old times, another way won't occur to me. Then I conclude that maybe no specific medicine for this problem exists in reality. 戻る
