松尾芭蕉翁とワビサビ俳諧倶楽部一座
夜が更けるのも忘れ、歌仙を巻き続けましょう
そう、私達は芭蕉翁とワビサビ俳諧倶楽部一座

WITH NOT A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS
What would you think if I sang out of tune,
Would you stand up and walk out on me
Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song of "New Yamanaka-bushi",
And I'll try not to sing out of key
I get by with not a little help from my friends,
I get high with not a little clap of my hands
Ah
- It was in the iris scented baths of last May,
that I fell in love with you at first sight.
- Please don't forget the way to Yamanaka,
Matsuyama to the east, Yakushi to the west.
- As the moon rises over Korogi Bridge,
the clandestine talk of love affairs sweeps all over the town.
- Shall I see you off? Shall I be seen off?
At least as far as Niten Bridge.*1)
- The leaves on the mountain trees will turn red and fall,
And so I am expecting the fishermen to be here soon.
- As the mountains are so high, Yamanaka is out of sight,
I love Yamanaka though not the mountains that obscure it.
- From Mt.Yakushi looking down to the bathhouse,
I saw a Shishi (Lioness - adult woman or geisha girl *2)
fixing her hair to make her appearance perfect.
- From Mt.Yakushi looking down to the Shozu,
I was captivated by a Shishi pouring water into jars.
- A towel I picked up at Katsura Shozu brought to me
the sensation of the flowing, hot springs of Yamanaka.
- I was embarrassed before the Katsura Jizo idol,
because I let him see my tears when I had to part with my lover.
- The sound of water comes from the river.
The hard wind from the mountain top.
Between these two sites is Yamanaka town,
and the fragrance of the hot springs.
- I want to fly to the teahouse at Korogi,
where a bridge of love stretches from me to you.
- Leaning against the wall with your Yukata draped on my shoulders,
I trace out the letter "Ro" with my foot.
- Our love was not to be Otsuru, so weeping parted at Niten Bridge.
- On shooting a Shishi, never aim at a Yukatabe (a young girl).
She may have chilled feet and heart
Our neighbor's girls and boys, why don't you join and dance with us,
because it is the Koikoi festival today.

ボクが調子外れの声で歌いだしたら、逃げ出してしまうかな？
でも、ちょっとばかり耳を貸してくれよ
そしたら「新山中節」を聞かせてあげるから
空気を読んで、キーは外さずに歌うからね

- 山が高うて山中見えぬ 山中恋しや山にくや
- 薬師山から湯座屋を見れば シシが髪結て身をやつす

- 桂清水でてぬぐい拾た これも山中湯の流れ
- 桂地蔵さんにわしゃ恥ずかしい 別れ涙の顔見せた
- 谷にや水音峰には嵐 あいの山中湯のにおい
- 飛んでいきたやこおろぎの茶屋 恋の架け橋二人づれ
- 浴衣肩にかけ戸板にもたれ 足でろの字をかくわいな
- 恋のしがらみかわいやおつる 泣いて別れた二天橋
- シシをうつなら ゆかたべーをうつな 足はつべたしかわらけや
隣のねーちゃんも、あんちゃんも一緒に踊りに来ないか？
今日はこいこい祭り、いっしょに来ないか、Ah
CHIYOJO IN THE SKY WITH KUTANIYAKI *3)
Picture yourself in an Old Kutani porcelain dish
With cedar-like trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with penta-colors eyes
Arabesque flowers of yellow and green,
Towering over your head
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
And she's gone
Chiyojo in the Sky with Kutaniyaki
Follow her down to Ayatori- hashi bridge by a waterfall
Where drunken Saijiro and artists eat modern burgers,
Everyone smiles as you drift past the morning glory,
That grows so incredibly high
Chiyojo in the sky with Kutaniyaki
千代女が九谷焼の皿を持って空に舞上る
そびえる杉の木とマーマーレード色の空で
あなたが古九谷皿を手にしている姿を想像してごらん
誰かがあなたを呼び、私？と、あなたはゆっくり振り返る
すると、五彩の瞳を持つ女の子がいて
黄釉と緑釉の唐草模様がどんどん天に向かって伸びていく
キラキラ輝く瞳の女の子は消えて
千代女が古九谷を持って空に上った
あやとりはしを下って不動滝のところまでたどりついた
酩酊状態の後藤才次郎と陶工たちが「今風ばーがー」をほおばっている
みんな微笑みながら、朝顔のそばを漂っている
その朝顔の蔓が、急に空に向かって延びていった
その先に、千代女が古九谷を手に空にいる

GETTING BETTER
It's getting better all the time
Teishitsu used to break down at Yamanaka!
Kumenosuke's *4) dad said that his Haiku wasn't cool
So coming back to Kyoto
He learned at Teitoku's school
I've got to admit his Haiku is getting better
A little better all the time
He's doing the best that he could
I have to admit it's getting better
He will never require tuition fee even a penny at Yamanaka
It's getting better since he was taught by Kumenosuke's dad in Yamanaka

日々是精励上達
貞室は山中で恥をかかされ、ガックリとなった
久米之助の父から「あんたの俳句はイマイチだ」と言われたのだ
貞室は一念発起、京都に戻ってから貞徳の門を叩いて精進の日々
うーむ、上達したな
少しずつだけど、確実に良くなった
貞室はベストを尽くしたんだ
これも泉屋先代のお陰だ、と貞室がビッグになり、
山中温泉で俳句講座を開催しても、一文の授業料も貰わなかった
だって、上達したのは泉屋先代、久米之助の父のお陰
貞室は、少しずつ、確実に、上達した
FIXING A NOTE
I'm fixing a note, "Yamanaka Q & A"
And stops my mind from wandering
Where will it go
And it really doesn't matter if it's wrong or right
If it's heavy or light, gain or lost, now or then, fluid or eternal,
About the world that we belong
See the people standing there who disagree and never help
Silly people run around like a heron worry me
And never ask me why they don't get past my door
I'm editing the leaflet for a number of things
That weren't important yesterday
And I still go

私は「山中問答」の原稿を推敲している最中だ
うーむ、どうしようか心は千々に乱れるのを収めるのも
どうすりゃいいんだろう？
できばえの良し悪しなど、どうでも良くなった
「軽み」や「不易流行」など、かみくだいて説明するのは難しい
そこへ来て、揚げ足取りの連中には本当に辟易だな
こういう愚かな連中は手伝いも、サポートもせず、
ただ重箱の隅をつつき、ギャーギャー騒いで足を引っ張るだけで
ドアをこじ開けたのか、知ろうとはしない
ああ、めんどくさい奴ら
この後リーフレットの編集も残っている
昨日はどうでも良かったんだが、仕上げないとね
でも今は「山中問答」を編集中
心は千々に乱れ、大混乱だ
俺はいったい、どうなるんだろう？
HE'S LEAVING HOME
Sunday afternoon at two o'clock as the teatime begins
Silently closing his bedroom door
Leaving the note that he was as sick as a dog
He goes downstairs to the kitchen clutching his Tenugui-towel
Quietly turning the backdoor key
Stepping outside he is free.
He (Going on and on and on)
is leaving (Even if I fall down)
home (Just like as straw-belly fields *5)
He's leaving inn after living alone
For so many years. Bye, bye
Basho snores as taking a nap after a lunch at Komatsu
And waking up and coming back Yamanaka soon.
Picks up the letter that's lying there
Standing alone at the top of the stairs
He breaks down and cries to himself
My secretary Sora is gone
Friday morning at nine o'clock he is far away
Waiting to keep the appointment he made
Meeting a woman from Tsuruga
He is having fun
Something inside that was always denied for so many years
Sora is leaving home bye bye
曽良は宿を出ていった
日曜の午後、未の刻でお茶の時間が過ぎる頃
静かに寝室の戸が開いた
「おなかの調子が凄く悪い」という書置きを残し
彼は階段を降り、手拭を握りしめたまま調理場を通り過ぎる
静かに勝手口から外へ出て、大きく息を吸い
「俺はもう自由だ」とつぶやいた
彼は （いきいきて）
宿を （たおれふすとも）
後にした （はぎのはら）
ずっと長い間、芭蕉翁と同行しながらも、
孤独なまま、息が詰るようだったが、
いま師匠の呪縛から解き放たれた （さようなら）
その時小松にいた翁、昼食後の昼寝で大いびき
やがて目を覚まし、山中に帰ってきたところ、
書付を手に取るなり、翁は取り乱し、大声を上げた
「曽良が出て行ったって！？ いったい、どういう了見だ！」
翁は愕然として、階段の踊り場で立ち尽くす
「なぜだ？ あんなに目をかけてやったのに」
金曜の辰の刻、曽良は遠く敦賀で懇ろの女と会っていた
彼は本当に楽しいひと時を過ごしていた
翁は俺のすべてを否定し、これっぽっちも分かってくれようとはしなかった
もう、師匠とは一緒にやっていけない・・長らく悩み続けた後
曽良は芭蕉の元を去っていった (Bye bye)
BEING FOR THE BENEFIT OF MR. KITA!
For the benefit of Mr. Kita
There will be a banquet tonight at Basho house
G. Henderson *7) introduced and translated the verse
"Furuike ya Kawazu Tobikomu Mizu no Oto" into
"Old pond and a frog-jump-in water-sound" at Tatami hall
In this way Mr. K. will challenge the world!

Performs his festival on Thursday at Yamanakaza
The Geigi girls *6) will dance and sing
As Mr. Kita flys and plays the part of a host don't be late
Messrs. K and H. assure the public
Their corporation will be second to none
And of course Mr.Faruda the barman shakes the cocktail with dancing the waltz!
The band begins at ten to six
Mr. F. will demonstrate
Ten summersets he'll undertake on cypress stage
Having been some days in preparation
Is a splendid time guaranteed for all?
And tonight Mr. Kita is topping the bill
ミスター・キタのために
皆様方、今宵はミスター・キタのために芭蕉の館で宴が催されます
日本文学の一人者、G.ヘンダーソン氏*7)はあの有名な芭蕉の一句
「古池や 蛙ず飛び込む 水の音」のこれまでにない新解釈の英訳
すなわち"Old pond and a frog-jump-in water-sound"
を座敷にてご披露なさいます
かようにして、ミスター・Ｋは世間に挑むのであります
かの有名なミスター・Ｋは木曜日に山中座で一大パフォーマンス
芸妓たちも唄い踊り、続いてミスター・Ｋが
「俺が主役だ。遅れてなるか」と飛び出して一座を盛上げます
もはやＫとＦのコンビは最強にして、敵う者無し
そして、バーテンダーのＦ氏はワルツを踊りながら、カクテルを振るのです
6時10分前からは楽団が演奏を始め、気分は最高潮に
続いて、Ｆ氏は桧舞台で10回連続とんぼ返りの荒業をご披露します
準備は万全にて仕上げは完璧ゆえ、満員の聴衆に見せる得意の「どや顔」
かようにして、ミスター・キタはプログラムを完璧に演じているのでした
WITHIN "YU" WITHOUT "YU" *8)
We were talking about the words of Kaga area especially Yamanaka
To recognize the people-who hide themselves behind the haze of hot spring
At first try to understand "Yu" is the key-word because it means bath
Within "Yu" without "Yu" may compared to inner bath and outside public bath
Yamanaka's "Kikuno-Yu" may be best but Ariake in Japan
We were talking about the other words of Kaga to understand
"anka" means elder-brother, boy, fellow, guy (opp. Nya-nya)
"asekurashii" means busy. "asekurashii ichinichi"is a busy day
"dara" is silly, stupid, foolish, "Dara na koto iuton na" means
"Hey you, don't be silly"and also use when someone blame down another.
Though widely used in Ishikawa pref, take much care when use it, or the serious matter may occur to you
"enzo" is the gutter of the roadside.
"yopparatte enzo no awasha ni makuriochiru" is
"drunken to collapse into gutter"
"henamanurui" means warm "henamanurui mizu (kaze)" is warm water (wind)
"heshine" means the state of a little irritating by waiting for some-thing.
"makureochiru" is fall , fall down, collapse
"kaidan kara makuri-ochiru" fall downstairs
"warabishii or warabishi" is childish, immature toward action, way of thought, narrow minded
"warabishi anka" means a narrow minded guy
Well who means me myself? Suddenly I feel in the bathing.
After going out of bathroom I meditate literary
Within "Yu" without "Yu"
ウチユ〜 ソトユ〜
私達は加賀、特に山中温泉の言葉について語り合った
湯煙の彼方に息づいている人々を理解するには、まずことば、
しかも「ゆ〜」がキーワードではないか
というのも「ゆ〜」は「アナタ」と「湯」の双方の意味がある
ウイズイン・ユー ウィズアウト・ユーは「内湯と外湯」の意味にもなる
しかも、山中の菊の湯は「有明の次」にランキングというくらいだからな
私達はさらに理解を深めるようと、加賀の言葉を捜してみた
- 【あんか】というのは「お兄さん」で対語は「にゃあにゃあ」
- 【あせくらしい】は「気ぜわしい・忙しい」
- 【だら】は「だらなこと言うとんな！」で分かるとおり「アホ、バカ、愚か」
山中に限らず、石川県では極めて多用されるが、
気をつけないと深刻な事態を招くので注意が必要だ
- 【えんぞ】道路の両側にある側溝 ｢酔っ払って、えんぞのあわしゃにまくれおちる｣
- 【へなまぬるい】生温かい ｢へなまぬるい風/水｣
- 【へしね】やや苛立たしい気持ちで待っている精神状態を指す
- 【まくれ落ちる】落ちることを強調していう動詞 ｢階段からまくり落ちる｣
【わらびし・わらびしい】狭量な、心の狭い、あるいは考え方や行動が子どもじみているようす
｢わらびしアンカ｣心の狭い奴
・・って、実は俺自身のことだったりして・・と湯船の中で頭によぎる
風呂から外に出てもう一度考えてみた
これこそ、文字通り「風呂の中で、風呂の外で」

"Yamanaka-bushi" translation by N. Loader 2002 U.K except for *1) which was adopted from the leaflet issued by Yamanaka-machi Shoukokai.
*2) *6) Although the word "Geisha" or "Geisha-girl" was used conventionally, it is in the tendency detested in Japan. So we sometimes use "Geigi" instead.
*3) Though Chiyojo does not necessarily means real Haiku poet who was called Chiyojo of Kaga, she is not the simultaneous with Matsuo Basho as written on the eighth edition. It is regrettable and sorry if we gave misunderstanding that Basho met Chiyojo at Yamanaka actually. Kutaniyaki was named after the place where the porcelain goods were produced for the first time in Edo era, the medieval times in Japan.
*4) Kumenosuke is the childhood name of Touyou who is the young owner of Izumiya inn where Basho stayed.
*5) Original verse appears "Haiku King" lower second line. But "Hagi" means bushclover.
*7) Henderson appears in original lyrics "Being For The Benefit of Mr.Kite!" And Harold Gould Henderson (1889-1974) was real Japanologist who was the professor of Columbia University for which graduated president Obama. See more article.
