解説

アメリカ・ザ・ビューティフルはアメリカ国民の愛唱歌である。作詞はウェルズリー大学の英語教師であった Katharine Lee Bates によるもので、コロラド大学のサマースクールの講師を務めるため彼女がコロラド州のコロラドスプリングス（Colorado Springs, Colorado）に旅した際に見た景色への感動をもとに書かれたもので、教会の定期刊行物で紹介されその後出版された。聖歌隊などでメロディがつけられ歌われていたが、最終的には Samuel A. Ward によって作曲された聖歌MATERNAが用いられることとなった。
