"Green Green Grass Of Home"

The old home town looks the same as I step down from the train,

and there to meet me was my Mama and Papa.

Down the road I look and there runs Mary hair of gold and lips like cherries.

It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.

Yes, they'll all come to meet me, arms reaching, smiling sweetly.

It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.

The old house is still standing tho' the paint is cracked and dry,

and there's that old oak tree I used to play on.

Down the lane I walk with my sweet Mary, hair of gold and lips like cherries.

It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.

Yes, they'll all come to meet me, arms reaching, smiling sweetly.

It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.

Then I awake and look around me, at four grey wall surround me

and I realize that I was only dreaming.

For there's a guard and there's a sad old padre -

arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak.

Again I touch the green, green grass of home.

Yes, they'll all come to see me in the shade of that old oak tree

as they lay me neath the green, green grass of home.

The song is about a man who has been away from home for a while. He tells that he is returning to his small home town in the country. When he steps down from the train, he touches the green grass. His parents and "sweet Mary" (who seems to be an old girlfriend) are there to welcome him. He observes tokens of his childhood, including "the old oak tree that [I] used to play on".

【名-1】 しるし、証拠{しょうこ}、徴候{ちょうこう}、表象{ひょうしょう}
・ Here's a small token of my appreciation. Please accept it.
【名-2】 記念品{きねん ひん}、土産{みやげ}

However, then comes a spoken section when he awakens in prison: "Then I awake and look around me, at four grey walls that surround me. And I realize that I was only dreaming." The man is, in reality, awaiting his execution, and he will only return home when he is dead and buried: "Yes, they'll all come to see me in the shade of that old oak tree, as they lay me 'neath the green, green grass of home."

CURLY PUTMAN
Born on a mountain named for his family in Princeton, Al.,
Curly Putman has placed the family name in even more auspicious
places.

auspicious
He made an auspicious start by hitting a home run the first time.

As one of the most successful Nashville songwriters, Putman
struggled for years before starting at the top. Working as a
shoe salesman, he supported his family while trying to break
into the music industry. He finally signed with Tree Publishing
Company. His first major recording, "Green, Green Grass of Home"
has been recorded by over 400 artists in every major language in
the world. The most successful version was recorded by Tom Jones
and sold between 10 and 12 million copies worldwide.

He has followed that initial success with many more. His song
"He Stopped Loving Her Today" was named the "Song of the Year"
twice by the Country Music Association. He has earned a total of
36 BMI awards for other songs like "My Elusive Dreams",
"D-I-V-O-R-C-E", "It Don't Feel Like Sinnin' To Me" and "It's A
Cheatin' Situation".

He has been selected as a member of the Nashville Songwriters
Association International Songwriter Hall of Fame, and has had a
ball field in his hometown of Princeton named after him.

Curly Putman

"Dumb Blonde" was Dolly Parton's first chart hit. I'm most proud of "Green Green Grass of Home." Tom Jones' record made the song internationally a hit and was recorded over 650 times in all major languages in the world. I'm also proud of records by Johnny Darrell, Porter Wagoner, and Jerry Lee Lewis. I've always thought in songs if you can cover love, hopeless situations, happiness and death you can touch people's souls! That makes for a great country song!"
