Now the earth was of one language and of the same speech.
And when they were advancing from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt in it.
And each one said to his neighbor, "Come, let us make bricks, and bake them with fire." And they had bricks instead of stones, and pitch instead of mortar.
And they said: "Come, let us make a city and a tower, so that its height may reach to heaven. And let us make our name famous before we are divided into all the lands."
Then the Lord descended to see the city and the tower, which the sons of Adam were building.
And he said: “Behold, the people are united, and all have one tongue. And since they have begun to do this, they will not desist from their plans, until they have completed their work.
Therefore, come, let us descend, and in that place confound their tongue, so that they may not listen, each one to the voice of his neighbor."
And so the Lord divided them from that place into all the lands, and they ceased to build the city.
And for this reason, its name was called ‘Babel,’ because in that place the language of the whole earth became confused. And from then on, the Lord scattered them across the face of every region.
Erat autem terra labii unius, et sermonum eorumdem.
Cumque proficiscerentur de oriente, invenerunt campum in terra Senaar, et habitaverunt in eo.
Dixitque alter ad proximum suum: Venite, faciamus lateres, et coquamus eos igni. Habueruntque lateres pro saxis, et bitumen pro camento:
et dixerunt: Venite, faciamus nobis civitatem et turrim, cuius culmen pertingat ad calum: et celebremus nomen nostrum antequam dividamur in universas terras.
Descendit autem Dominus ut videret civitatem et turrim, quam adificabant filii Adam,
et dixit: Ecce, unus est populus, et unum labium omnibus: cœperuntque hoc facere, nec desistent a cogitationibus suis, donec eas opere compleant.
Venite igitur, descendamus, et confundamus ibi linguam eorum, ut non audiat unusquisque vocem proximi sui.
Atque ita divisit eos Dominus ex illo loco in universas terras, et cessaverunt adificare civitatem.
Et idcirco vocatum est nomen eius Babel, quia ibi confusum est labium universa terra: et inde dispersit eos Dominus super faciem cunctarum regionum.
Και ητο πασα η γη μιας γλωσσης και μιας φωνης.
Και οτε εκινησαν απο της ανατολης, ευρον πεδιαδα εν τη γη Σεννααρς και κατωκησαν εκει.
Και ειπεν ο εις προς τον αλλον, Ελθετε, ας καμωμεν πλινθους, και ας ψησωμεν αυτας εν πυρι· και εχρησιμευσεν εις αυτους η μεν πλινθος αντι πετρας, η δε ασφαλτος εχρησιμευσεν εις αυτους αντι πηλου.
Και ειπον, Ελθετε, ας οικοδομησωμεν εις εαυτους πολιν και πυργον, του οποιου η κορυφη να φθανη εως του ουρανους και ας αποκτησωμεν εις εαυτους ονομα, μηπως διασπαρωμεν επι του προσωπου πασης της γης.
Κατεβη δε ο Κυριος δια να ιδη την πολιν και τον πυργον, τον οποιον ωκοδομησαν οι υιοι των ανθρωπων.
Και ειπεν ο Κυριος, Ιδου, εις λαος, και παντες εχουσι μιαν γλωσσαν, και ηρχισαν να καμνωσι τουτος και τωρα δεν θελει εμποδισθη εις αυτους παν ο, τι σκοπευουσι να καμωσινς
ελθετε, ας καταβωμεν και ας συγχυσωμεν εκει την γλωσσαν αυτων, δια να μη εννοη ο εις του αλλου την γλωσσαν.
Και διεσκορπισεν αυτους ο Κυριος εκειθεν επι του προσωπου πασης της γης· και επαυσαν να οικοδομωσι την πολιν.
Δια τουτο ωνομασθη το ονομα αυτης Βαβελ· διοτι εκει συνεχεεν ο Κυριος την γλωσσαν πασης της γης· και εκειθεν διεσκορπισεν αυτους ο Κυριος επι το προσωπον πασης της γης.
בראשית ברא אלהים את השמים ואת הארץ:
והארץ היתה תהו ובהו וחשך על-פני תהוםורוח אלהים מרחפת על-פני המים:
ויאמר אלהים יהי אור ויהי-אור:
וירא אלהים את-האור כי-טוב ויבדל אלהיםבין האור ובין החשך:
ויקרא אלהים לאור יום ולחשך קרא לילהויהי-ערב ויהי-בקר יום אחד:
ויאמר אלהים יהי רקיע בתוך המים ויהימבדיל בין מים למים:
ויעש אלהים את-הרקיע ויבדל בין המים אשרמתחת לרקיע ובין המים אשר מעל לרקיעויהי-כן:
ויקרא אלהים לרקיע שמים ויהי-ערב ויהי-בקריום שני:
ויאמר אלהים יקוו המים מתחת השמים אל-מקוםאחד ותראה היבשה ויהי-כן:
