Tilley-1

Following 5 pictures are quoted from Neil McRae's collection with his permission.
Thanks Neil.

This is a "Tilley model IL47", an indoor lamp which would have been used in station rooms and in signal boxes.
300cp kerosene lamp made by the Tilley Lamp Co. of Hendon England between 1947 and 1962.

Here is another Tilley Donut lamp. This one is a "Tilley model OL50" outdoor lamp.
These were mainly used by the rail companies for all outside lighting.
This is a 300cp kerosene lamp made from about 1935 to 1940.

This one is a "Tilley AL15" from the mid 50s.
A 250cp hand lantern used by the rail companies as an inspection lamp.

This is a "Tilley model AL11" made in 1937.
This one has a 250cp burner and produces 1500 reflected cp.

This is a very rare group of lanterns.
They were mainly made for export so are not seen in the UK much.
The left one is "Tilley model X458" and is known as "Flounder fishing lamp".
The middle one is "Tilley model X410" and the right one is "Tilley model X460".
They are all 250cp lanterns made in the late 50s and early 60s.

Thanks Neil.

This is a Tilley Radiator Model R1 probably made in 1950s.
It has a brass-made fount which was painted cream and a strap handle with no grip.

This is a Tilley Model TL136 table lamp made in between 1952 to 56. TL136 lamps were shorter versions of TL106 and had 3 styles of the fount. However the model numbers did not change. This particular model has the second style fount painted light cream on the brass. Originally it came with a parchment shade.

Tilley Model PL53, I suppose it is a relatively earlier type.
It has an all-brass-made fount which was polished very well and has a brown porcelain enamel ventilator.
The wire cage for glass globe was made of steel, while the folding bail was made of brass.
Its unique curved glass globe, made in England, was printed "Tilley Pyrex Brand 182 Heat Resisting".

This is another "Tilley Model PL53" which is relatively later type.
The noticeable differences from above are the folding bail & maroon porcelain enamel ventilator.

Here is a Tilley Model PL53 from 1940s ( 1940 to 1946 ).
It has a brass made fount which was painted gold and brass handles with loop.
The ventilator hood is an unpolished chrome plated over brass one. Because the chrome is not polished they often look like aluminium. They have the great advantage that unlike the enamelled ones they do not deteriorate with the heat.

Tilley Model X246. It is the first design of Model X246 with a very distinctive dome topped fount, brass frame and brass food with enameled steel heat deflector. It was introduced in 1946 and with some changes to the frame & food, it had been in production until around 1950.

Another Tilley Model X246. It seems to be the second design of Model X246 with dome topped fount and made between around 1948-1950. It is quoted from Herman Mulder's collection with his permission. Thanks Herman.

This is also a "Tilley Model X246".

Although there were 2 types fount in Model X246, this is the later one and probably manufactured in early '50s.
It has an all-brass-made fount, though original chrome plated was gone, and a black porcelain enamel ventilator.
Its glass globe was printed "TILLEY PYREX 171 HEAT RESISTING MADE IN UK".

Please look at the right image.
It is an original gold painted X246 and is quoted from Neil McRae's collection with his permission.
Tilley X246 was never sold in polished brass like mine. Only painted gold with brown hood or chrome plated with black hood. Please be careful.
Thanks Neil.

Here is another Tilley Model X246 and is quoted from Tetsuya Toda's collection with his permission.
It was made in 1959 and is equipped with the pressure indicator though it is difficult to see from this image. Thanks Tetsuya.

Here is a Tilley Model X359, 300cp krosene lantern. It has a pre-heat torch on its nickel plated brass fount and the shape of its black enameled ventilator is different from Model X246's. It was only made in 1959/60.

This is a Tilley Model X246A and is quoted from Paul & Janet Hardman's collection with their permission. Although the color of the fount is not original and was repainted red, it looks very good. This particular one was made in November 1963 and this type-A model was in a short life of only 3 or so years, 1962 to 1965. It is one of the last Tilley lamps with all brass pump and control cock and is an interesting model as it shows the transition from Hendon made X246s and the Belfast made X246s when Tilley moved their production in the early 1960's. Thanks Paul & Janet.

This is a "Tilley model X246B".
It has a chrome plated all-brass-made fount and black porcelain enamel ventilator.
It was made in Mar. 2000 and is in unlit condition.
