青　春

青春とは人生のある期間ではなく、心の持ちかたを言う。
薔薇の面差し、紅の唇、しなやかな肢体ではなく、
たくましい意思、ゆたかな想像力、炎える情熱をさす。
青春とは人生の深い泉の清新さをいう。

青春とは怯懦(きょうだ）を退ける勇気、安易を振り捨てる冒険心を意味する。
ときには、２０歳の青年よりも６０歳の人に青春がある。
年を重ねただけで人は老いない。
理想を失うとき初めて老いる。

歳月は皮膚にしわを増すが、熱情を失えば心はしぼむ。
苦悩・恐怖・失望により気力は地に這い、精神は芥になる。

６０歳であろうと１６歳であろうと人の胸には、
驚異に魅かれる心、おさな児のような未知への探究心、
人生への興味の歓喜がある。
君にも吾にも見えざる駅逓が心にある。
人から神から美・希望・喜悦・勇気・力の霊感を受ける限り君は若い。

霊感が絶え、精神が皮肉の雪におおわれ、
悲歎の氷にとざされるとき、２０歳であろうと人は老いる。
頭を高く上げ希望の波をとらえる限り、
８０歳であろうと人は青春にして已む。

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind;
it is not a matter of rosy cheeks,
red lips and supple knees;
it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination,
a vigor of the emotions;
it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance
of courage over timidity of the appetite,
for adventure over the love of ease.
This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.
Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.
We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin,
but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.
Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart
and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether sixty or sixteen,
there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder,
the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next,
and the joy of the game of living.
In the center of your heart and my heart..
there iz a wireless station;
so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage
and power from men and from the Infinite,
so long are you young.

When the aerials are down,
and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and
the ice of pessimism,
then you are grown old,
even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up,
to catch the waves of optimism,
there is hope you may die young at eighty.

青春とは

真の青春とは、若き肉体にあるのではなく、若き精神のなかにこそある。
薔薇色の頬、真赤な唇、しなやかな身体
そういうものは、たいした問題ではない。
問題にすべきは、強い意志、ゆたかな想像力、もえあがる情熱
そういうものが、あるか　ないか

こんこんと湧きでる泉のように
あなたの精神は
今日も新鮮だろうか、いきいきしているだろうか。

臆病な精神の中に、青春はない。
大いなる愛のために発揮される
勇気と冒険心のなかにこそ、青春はある。
臆病な２０歳がいる。
既にして老人、勇気ある６０歳がいる。
青春のまっただなか
年を重ねただけで人は老いない。
夢を失った時、はじめて老いる。

歳月は皮膚にしわを刻むが
情熱を失ったとき、精神はしわだらけになる。
苦悩、恐怖、自己嫌悪
それらは精神をしぼませ、ごみくずに変えてしまう。

誰にとっても大切なもの、それは感動する心
次は何が起こるのだろうと
目を輝かせる子供のような好奇心
胸をときめかせ、未知の人生に挑戦する喜び

さあ、目を閉じて思い浮かべてみよう。
あなたの心の中にある無線基地
青空高くそびえたつ、たくさんの光り輝くアンテナ
アンテナは受信するだろう。
偉大な人々からのメッセージ
崇高な大自然からのメッセージ
世界がどんなに美しく、驚きにみちているか
生きることが、どんなに素晴らしいか。

勇気と希望、ほほえみを忘れず
いのちのメッセージを受信しつづけるかぎり
あなたはいつまでも青年。

だが　もしもあなたの　心のアンテナが　倒れ
雪のように冷たい皮肉と
氷のように頑固な失望におおわれるならば
たとえ２０歳であったとしても、あなたは立派な老人
あなたの心のアンテナが
今日も青空高くそびえ立ち
いのちのメッセージを、受信つづけるかぎり
たとえ８０歳であったとしても、あなたはつねに青春

太平洋戦争の末期、マッカーサー元帥のデスクの上にもこの詩が掲げられていたということです。
日本が降伏し、連合国軍最高司令官として着任した執務室にも掲げられていたそうです。

YOUTH

Youth is not a time of life----it is a state of mind;
it is a temper of the will, a quality of the imaginaton,
a vigor of the emotions,  a predominance of courage over timidity,
of the appetite for adventure over love of ease.

Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years;
people grow old only by deserting thier ideals.

Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm
wrinkles the soul. Worry, doubt, self-distrust,
fear and despair--these are the long,
long years that bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust.
 
Whether seventy or sixteen,
there is in every being's heart the love of wonder,
the sweet amazement at the stars and the starlike things and thoughts,
the undaunted challenge of events,
the unfailing childike aooetite for what next,
and the joy and  the game of life.

You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt;
as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear,
as young as your hope, as old as your despair.
 
So long as your heart receives messages of beauty, cheer, courage, grandeur and power from the earth, from man and from the Infinite,
so long you are young.

When the wires are all down and all the central place of your heart is coverd with the snows of pessimism and the ice of cynicism, then you are grown old indeed and may God have mercy on your soul.

青　　春

青春とは人生の或る期間を言うのではなく心の様相を言うのだ。
逞しき意思、優れた創造力、炎ゆる情熱、怯懦を却ける勇猛心、
安易を振り捨てる冒険心、こう言う様相を青春というのだ。

年を重ねただけで人は老いない。理想を失う時に初めて老いがくる。
歳月は皮膚のしわを増すが、情熱を失う時に精神はしぼむ。
苦悶や狐疑や、不安、恐怖、失望、こう言うものこそ恰も長年月の如く人を老いさせ、
精気ある魂をも芥に帰せしめてしまう。

年は70であろうと、16であろうと、その胸中に抱き得るものは何か。
曰く、驚異への愛慕心、空にきらめく星晨、
その輝きにも似たる事物や思想に対する欽仰、事に処する剛毅な挑戦、
小児の如く求めて止まぬ探究心、人生への歓喜と興味。
　
　人は信念と共に若く、　疑惑と共に老ゆる。
　人は自信と共に若く、　恐怖と共に老ゆる。
　希望ある限り若く、失望と共に老い朽ちる。

大地より、神より、人より、美と喜悦、勇気と壮大、
そして偉力の霊感を受ける限り人の若さは失われない。

これらの霊感が絶え、悲歎の白雪が人の心の奥までも蔽いつくし、
皮肉の厚氷がこれを硬くとざすに至ればこの時にこそ
人は全くに老いて神の憐れみを乞う他はなくなる。

岡田義男氏の翻訳したこの詩が、財界の人々の心を動かし”青春の会”が発足。会の中心は旧制静岡高校の同窓生。中曽根康弘氏（元総理大臣）、野間省一氏（講談社）、小山五郎氏（三井銀行）、持田信夫氏（持田製薬）、古屋特兵衛氏（松屋）、宮沢次郎氏（トッパン・ムーア）その他そうそうたるメンバーで構成され、日本経済が勢い良く成長していた頃、財界の人たちが好んで話題にし、勇気付けられてさらに成長して行ったのではないか。
