マザーズ結成10周年を祝い行われた歴代最強のメンバーによる1974年の、9月7日からスタートした秋のヨーロッパツアーから、10月1日スイス、バーゼルでの1日2公演を近年再発掘された放送用マスター音源より、過去最高のベスト・クオリティー、サウンドボードにて収録。この年のファースト・レグ・ツアーではホーン・セクションも交えたあのオフィシャル「Roxy & Elsewhere」を彷彿とさせるものだったのに対し、このユーロ・ツアーからの最終レグでは6人編成による強靭なバンド・アンサンブルを全面に。よってそのプレイぶりは周知の通りこの時期ならではのジャズ・アンサンブルの強い演奏と、芸達者な面々によるインタープレイの凄まじい応酬が最後まで聞く者を圧倒。しかも昼夜公演でオープニング部分だけが同じ構成で、3曲目以降から全く違う展開によるセットリストなのも嬉しいかぎり。いずれも各テーマ曲に様々な導入があり、めくるめく超絶プレイがふんだんに盛り込まれており、これだけのパフォーマンスを1日2公演行っていたことが驚異的。特にレイト・ショーは演奏時間も若干長く、終盤に至ってはジョージ・デュークやチェスター・トンプソンらのすさまじいプレイに触発され、ルースのマリンバも目も眩みそうな手技で応酬。また”Louie Louie”にモーツアルトのソナタを挿入したりと、相変わらずの遊び心も随所に。やはりザッパはこの時期！というファンに送る74年ライブのマスト・アイテムです！ |
