NIKKO CARVING was initiated approximateiy 300 and several decades ago when craftmen were caiied in from all parts of Japan to beengaged in construction of the Nikko Shrine. These craftmen, aftercompletion of the shrine, settled down in this area and engaged themselves in establishing the foundation of the Nikko carving. The carved wood surface is coated with red or black lacquer one layer after another with fine particles of black or occasionally, brown pigment applied on surface, and then polished in finishing.
