馬場菊太郎

ばば きくたろう (1905 - 2001) [男性]


馬場が活躍する時代には既に多くの貝類専門家がいたが、後鰓類研究は藤田経信・平瀬信太郎の わずかな研究を除くと未開の分野であった。 馬場博士は多くの海外の研究者と最新の知識を交流することで、日本での数少ない後鰓類専門家となった。その研究は日本の 後鰓類の多様性を世界中に知らしめることになり、馬場は世界中の後鰓類研究家から敬愛された。

夫人とは二人三脚の研究で、コピー機がない時代に専門の文献を書き写して馬場を助けていた。平坂恭介教授の勧めにより、 たまたまイセエビ漁で捕獲されれたカセミミズを研究し、昭和15年(1940年)、京都帝国大学から理学博士の学位を受ける。 主要論文は「色素注入法による溝腹類カセミミズの吸収及び排出機構」。

昭和天皇陛下が収集した後鰓類について解説をするように御下命を受け、"相模湾産後鰓類図譜"(昭和24年)、" 相模湾産後鰓類図譜補遺"(昭和30年)を発表する。

その後晩年まで研究を絶やさず、他界寸前まで研究は続けられた。生涯に記載した後鰓類の新種は約112種。最後の研究は 濱谷巌と共著となった「日本産ショウワアメフラシの記録」である。本文献は2003年に濱谷により、馬場の逝去後、日本貝類学会 より公表された。濱谷は馬場の遺稿(未発表)をもとにさらに所見を追加して記載したため、第二著者として馬場の名が載る。
