Oh my god, celestial sphere is too heavy for my weak shoulders I’ll have stiff shoulders sooner or later. Before I drew the illustration, I misunderstood that the giant was upholding the earth. By the way, how’s your ear? According to your diary, you seem to suffer from the pips one after another, but you keep at studying Korean and make progress steadily. You said ‘To speak another language is to live another life.’ So you’re getting one more life. Nothing succeeds like success. I’m still in the track of learning English and I can’t get another life yet, though I have nine lives.

So Atlas has the universe on his shoulders, not the earth. My left ear seems O.K. Thanks. The turbulence was really terrible, though. Im sorry my colleague quit because of illness, and I feel like I am shouldering something heavy myself now. I just love the beautiful sounds of Korean and the way it is spoken. To me, too, English is a foreign language and I will be in the process of learning it all my life. (Sweet are the uses of adversity) is not necessarily a proverb which, I think, is true, but I will just keep it up anyway. I think your enthusiasm to learn English is great. Thanks for coming and have a nice weekend. Yours, R.Tsukuo

Thank you updated the illustration as usual. I got two nice English phrases from your comment and diary. I’ve been having my hands full with work and taking care of my parents recently, so ‘stop and smell the roses’ is what I need right now. Another one is ‘naturally air-headed’. What a suitable phrase to describe my character! I’m a naturally air-headed procrastinator. I hope this proverb doesn’t work to my husband ‘The rotten apple injures its neighbor’.

Long time no see. Are you getting better? To my amazement, I haven’t had a cold in this winter. I’ve been susceptible to colds but I became strong or foolish may be. I hope the Avian Flu won’t infect human beings in future. We have lots of shameful news on the newspaper and TV recently. In my opinion the worst one is that not a few parents don’t pay the charge of school meal even though they can afford that. Once a famous comedian’s mother said ‘School never went bankrupt though she didn’t pay the charge of school meal’. In this story, she tried to hide her sadness because her poorness hurt and embarrassed her son in a school. If she had enough money, she would pay that, first of all. If those parents knew this story, ‘None so deaf as those who will not hear’

I found new vocabulary in your diary, it’s ‘procrastinator’. What a suitable word to describe my character! I tend to postpone, what I have to do, until the deadline. Especially in this month I have tons of things which I should do imperatively. But I have an exception of my bad hobbit it’s a crossword puzzle. When I was in a high school and university, if teachers had made the tests and questions as puzzles, my scores would be better but too late now. I saw the Kanji symbolized of this year was Life (Inochi) on the TV news program. On one hand, a stray dog left on a cliff was rescued on the other hand not a few children were killed by abuse and bully. ‘Death equals all men’ but Life isn’t equal. I hope your happy healthy life next year.

My vocabulary is from the 70s American English, according to a native speaker I sometimes talk with. Some students are procrastinators all right, but some students never try to think for themselves. As far as life is concerced, No pain, no gain is very true, isnt it? However, they ignore the process and just want the result without making an effort. Let me wish you a Merry Christmas. My father-in-law passed away this year, so I am supposed to refrain from exchanging New Years greetings.

[Comment] :   Hi Tsukuo-san,
I saw a wistful romantic movie at my English teacher’s video night event on the 18th. I was impressed with beautiful scenery and the story. The title of this movie was “Brokeback Mountain” and the theme was homosexual cowboys in conservative American society in 1953. Homosexual is neither crime nor disease. No one can stop love, but if he/she felt in love with same gender, he/she has to hide it in his/hers society because of religion, custom and homophobia. It is sad that being different in society isnt accepted and it could in fact get you killed or imprisoned. Bullying at school with awful result is caused by the same reason, I guess. If people deal fairly with homosexual, it goes to prove that the society is tolerant, peaceful and intellective. I know everybody has human right but, Im not sure, if I saw my husband kissed a man, what should I do? My proverb this time is ‘Soon said than done’.

Suicides caused by bullying have longe existed in schools, but why do the media take up this issue now on such a large scale? Maybe there is a lot of media control by the government. The present administration is going to revise the Fundamental Law of Education, and the revision conflicts with the Constitution. Might is right as the saying goes, and those who intend to change the law are so fussy now about what is wrong with Japans education today. My proverb this time is Empty vessels make the most sound. I went to see autumn tint to Mt.Daisen with my husband and friend on the 7th and 8th of Nov. My husband drove us to visit here and there around the area. We checked the weather news, so we expected a little but when we arrived at the hill side, the temperature was 0 to 3 degrees centigrade and snow was falling. We were lucky because we could see the mountain; upper half was covered with snow and bottom half was still in beautiful autumn colors, even though it was cold enough. The next day, we had fine weather and the temperature was almost 20 degrees centigrade. We enjoyed cycling. I heard the news of incident that big twister happened in Hokkaido and then 9persons died. These happenings are proof of irregular climate. Certainly the planet earth is on turning point. We should forget this proverb and heve gloval sight.Self-preservation is the first law of nature. I don’t want to be a spectator of the end of the earth!

We hear much unwelcome news and few welcome news everyday. One of big hit was a baseball player Shinjyo retired at the age of 34. He activated Hokkaido, teammates and then made people happy. Actually I’m not a baseball fan but I was impressed in front of the TV. Talk of unblessed news isn’t my cup of tea. By the way I sometimes make small changes in my house before my husband comes back and show him how busy I was and what I did during the day. “Years bring wisdom” Do you agree?

Once I heard comfortable sounds of ripple and clitter-clatter with spoon. I met my Thai friend and her family in Bangkok. There were no tank and solder. Everything goes as usual except that my friend’s children were pleased with extra two holidays from their school at the coup. What a peaceful nationality they have. Now I hear awful sounds of quakes caused of nuclear tests and ammunition boots. Someone has crossed the Rubicon. A proverb says “Worse things happen at sea.” But I wonder what can be worse than this incident.

Finally the next prime minister was elected and there was no surprise. He said the revise of the Fundamental Law of Education in his manifesto at the election as you mentioned. What’s going on in our near future? By the way I saw the movie “Il Mare” “Lake House” in English title. The plot was excellent, the actor and the actress were nice and the scenery was amazing and romantic though I haven’t seen the Koreans original. I could omit the inconsistency in the story, yes; movies are virtual world so every thing can happen there. Another topic, my husband and I are going to visit Thailand from tomorrow to Sep 3. We saw the news of coup that happened in Bangkok, after we booked the air tickets and hotels. My Thai friend gave me real time information, every thing goes as usual, nothing special, and so we should go by any means! When I got back home from trips I always say this proverb starting with E East or West, home is best.”

Congratulations! You took the jug. I delivered it to you wearing maid’s costume. I saw a very interesting but terrible TV program recently. The title was “Claims toward schools” Gakkou he no Ichamon. Not few parents think that they have unlimited rights to request teachers anything they want. For example, a parents asked to the teacher in charge to baby-sit their child during they were traveling. Another example, one father washed his car in a school backyard and parked overnight and then he found some scratches on it next morning. He complained and put in a claim for damages. Oh my god! They said that many teachers have mental problem because of these unbelievable parents. The next prime minister should think of how to discipline parents. I know this proverb starting with R Rules are made to be broken. But I’d like to make new one for them “Rules are made to follow.”

I guess we have a lot in common with the cold. My symptoms are almost similar as yours. They are a sore throat, a bit of a runny nose and coughing when I get to sleep in a bed. I have a cat’s character so I really love sleeping; therefore these symptoms bother me seriously. But finally I wake up every morning, this means I slept well at every night. Sleep is the best way to cure of a disease and sometimes to escape from a maze of tough crossword puzzle, I believe. So I chose this one “The best advice is found on the pillow”.

I had a lot of fun in Cambodia with my husband. Angkor is one of famous world heritage and I’ve been looking forward to visiting there. We walked around there for three days under hot humid weather. It was Cambodian New Year so lots of local people were enjoying picnic here and there. We moved to Bangkok and ordered ice beer at a local restaurant as usual but we couldn’t get it. Oh my god! During holding election, Thai government didn’t allow to selling any alcohol beverages even though in supermarkets and convenience stores. But I found some foreign tourists were drinking can beers on the street side, and then I took heart of grace to ask them where they got them. Finally, I got four cans of cold beer behind of a main street. Following saying starting with F just fits this situation, “Fortune favors the bold”
