Spring
2002, that is, as in the spring 2002 collections
going on display at this week's Fashion Week
extravaganza. For the next several days, fashion
designers, magazine editors, apparel industry
bigwigs, celebrities and wannabe celebrities will
all converge -- usually in tents in Manhattan's
Bryant Park -- to see next year's clothes. |

"If
you take a look at who attends these shows, it's
press and friends of the company," he told
Reuters. "So the more exposure you can get,
the better return you're going to get on your

course, the people who are really making the
decisions are the department-store buyers. If
they don't like the designs, they have the power
to go back and ask for changes, says CNN's Gail
O'Neill. |

you see on the runway is going to get to us
eventually, but where you see ... sheer fabrics,
you will eventually see opaque fabrics; where you
see hemlines that fall inches below the hips,
it's going to be lengthened," she reports. |

von Furstenberg called her show "Rebel
Princess," a look she described as "roses
and razor blades" and "savage chic."
Von
Furstenberg mixed floaty floral chiffon tops with
thin peg-legged and pinstriped pants, lace wrap
tops with trousers and what she dubbed a "boss
woman" striped dress with black ruffled
bikini, Reuters reported.

later in the week is a new face, Michael
Faircloth. The Dallas, Texas-based designer
caught the public's attention earlier this year
when he designed the gown first lady Laura Bush
wore to the inaugural celebration. |

| "For
this season, it's a little more punk. I'm calling
it 'Sex Pistols in the City'," she says. Gardner
also lined up a little star power for her runway:
"Sopranos" actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler,
who plays Meadow Soprano.
"She's a kind of role model for a lot of
teen-age girls that we're going to be showing to,"
says Gardner.

a time not to play safe," she said. "It's
really a time to take real direction in your
work, a strong point of view that really people
feel they want," she told Reuters. "If
people want to buy new clothes, it's not to buy
the same white shirt they used to have 20 years
ago, but really to have a new shirt, with a new
cut, with a new fabric, to feel different,"
she said.
