Oh, Jackie ! - Washington
ジャッキー～名門ケネディ家の威光いまだ ( 2002-04-12)

もう記憶から消えつつあるケネディ元大統領夫人だったジャクリーヌだが、ケネディ家の威光でいまだに輝き続けている	"Fey". That was Jack Kennedy's immediate response when a reporter once asked him to describe his wife, Jackie, in one word. The answer still stands out in my mind for two reasons.

今アメリカの各都市で"Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years" としてジャッキーのファッションなどを展示中	Remarkably, she was just 31 years old when she began working her magic as the wife of the young president-elect from Massachusetts. And to mark the 40th anniversary of that milestone the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. has just unveiled an installation called Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years- Selections From the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum.

ファーストレディとしてもジヴァンシーなどフランスものが好きだった	Jackie was as devoted to the designers of her era as they were to her. Her favorite couturier was Hubert de Givenchy (of "Breakfast at Tiffanys" fame). But she was a pragmatist who understood that having a wardrobe made in France could court resentment with the American public.

Mrs. Kennedy also had luck with another American designer by the name of Halston, who at the time, was a hat designer for Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan. He was the first to put her in a pillbox, and the look was to become her signature. Together, they made fashion history.	帽子でもファッションストリーを築いた
But to write Jackie off as mere mannequin or muse to fashion's brightest stars would be a mistake, says Hamish Bowles. The Vogue magazine editor is curator of the retrospective, and he observes that she was a collaborator who "rigorously oversaw her own visual presentation".	賛否両論あったが
Rose Kemble, a self-proclaimed "Jackie O fanantic", saw the show when it debuted in New York City last year. おしゃれは足元からは当然です

When it comes to men's fashion, styles tend to be more evolutionary than revolutionary. That's especially true when it comes to shoes.

あらゆる局面からシューズのコーディネートについて考えれば	For example: check out any old black and white film. While the clothes, the cars and certainly the manners are a dead giveaway of a certain time and place in history -- only the most astute observer of style could look at the leading man's shoes and tell you their vintage.

Americans have always valued comfort. In fact, our affinity for gym shoes (whether or not we work out) has been our hallmark around the world for decades. 今までうまいなぁ、と思ったＣＭのキャッチコピーのひとつがトヨタの”Drive your dream"　である。
このコピーをうまくかぶせた、トヨタF1( Panasonic Toyota )のTVCMコピー（ヨーロッパ版）がこれである。

Round five of the 2002 Formula 1 World Championship takes place at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. It is a familiar track to Panasonic Toyota Racing because it was here that the team conducted much of its pre-season test programme.	ラウンド５が練習サーキットで慣れたバルセロナのカタルーニャで４月２８日にスタート

In Asia a growing number of viewers are tuning into television services that are provided illegally from other countries.

-- World champions France were stunned by a 92nd minute goal as they lost at home to Belgium -- their first defeat since going down to Chile last September.

ほんとうに日本は予選突破できるのか？　外からみたJapanへの評価を探る。

キーマンはNakataとしながらもInamotoやOnoがいかに機能するか	At the center of Japan's every move is Hidetoshi Nakata. The midfielder burst onto the scene at the 98 World Cup, impressing all with his neat touches on the ball and crisp passes. If there is an open man, Nakata will find him. Just ask Parma teammates Savo Milosevic and Marco Di Vaio. Complimenting Nakata in midfield are two other Japanese exports, Junichi Inamoto (Arsenal) and Shinji Ono (Feyenoord).
前回大会と何も課題は変わっていない	The talented trio creates plenty of chances; the problem is that there is no one to finish them off. Japan lacks a true center forward, and that will always hurt their ambitions in major tournaments.

Their experience at the top level is also limited, with only one World Cup appearance.

The problem is that in the World Cup, defenses are tight and there is little space to maneuver in the penalty area. So the question is whether the nation's front line be able to adjust to these conditions, considering that much of the side plays professionally in the domestic J-League.
開催国への配慮か、Sports Illustrated誌はこんな期待？を載せている	Don't be shocked if Japan makes it out of its group and sneaks into the final 16. But whether they can make it past that stage is doubtful, considering they will probably come up against an experienced nation. It will be interesting to see how far the fans can inspire their stars at the finals.
